Rally's desktop app for macOS is a recording companion to the web app. As a native app, it includes things like cursor tracking which are not readily available to browser-only recording sessions.

Installing the macOS app

Get the latest version of the macOS app from the app download page. Once installed, the app will automatically download and apply updates. The app requires a Mac with Apple Silicon (for example M1, M2, M3 chips) to run.

Run the installer, and drag the app into your application folder.

Approve app permissions for recording

On first run, the app will ask you to approve permissions needed to record your screen, camera, and microphone. Each of these must be granted individually, and the preflight checklist shown on screen will verify when done. You will need to restart the app once granting some permissions for them to take effect.

Recording and publishing stories

Once installed, you can choose between Window + Display recordings. The UI for the recording app will not appear in the final recording, so you do not need to worry about hiding it for full screen recordings.

When you finish recording, the app will automatically open the recording in the Rally web app. This recording will include the narration, screen recording, and click event tracks used for automatic cursor zooms. You can adjust the results before publishing via Timeline in the story editor.

Note: If you have the app installed, you will have an option to automatically use it for new recordings within the web app going forward.
